| Philosopher, born in Scotland, UK. He studied at Glasgow University and taught (1918–27) at the universities of Cardiff, Glasgow, and Edinburgh before becoming professor of philosophy at the University of Sydney (1927–58). He can be regarded as the founder and main exponent of an Australian school of philosophy, espousing a distinctive blend of realism, empiricism, and materialism. His articles were collected in Studies in Empirical Philosophy (1962). |
