| Irish politician and prime minister (1948–51, 1954–7), born in Dublin, Ireland. He studied at University College, Dublin, and was called to the bar in 1914. He became attorney general (1926–32), and in 1948 was prime minister of a government of several parties, his own Fine Gael Party being the chief member. One of his first acts was to repeal the External Relations Act, which paved the way that year for the formal change from the State of Eire to the Republic of Ireland. |
