name: Newlands, John (Alexander Reina)

sex: male
lived: (1837–98)

biography: Chemist, born in London, UK. He worked in a sugar refinery at the Victoria Docks, London. He was the first to arrange the elements in order of atomic number and to see the connection between every eighth. This ‘law of octaves’ brought him ridicule at the time (1864), but it was the first idea of a periodic law, and in 1887 the Royal Society awarded him its Davy Medal in recognition of his work.
