| Theologian, probably born in Lincolnshire, EC England, UK. He studied at the University of Paris, was made a cardinal by Pope Innocent III in 1206, and became Archbishop of Canterbury in 1207. His appointment was resisted by King John, and Langton was kept out of the see until 1213, living mostly at Pontigny. He sided warmly with the barons against John, and his name is the first of the subscribing witnesses of Magna Carta. |
