| A leading regent in The Netherlands. He was appointed one of the Committee of Four (two English and two Dutch) controlling the Southern Netherlands in the War of the Spanish Succession until the hand-over to Charles VI of Austria in 1716. In 1748 he was discharged from his position as burgomaster of Leiden by Prince William IV of Orange, as he was considered to be too republican. |
