| Mathematician, born in Basel, N Switzerland, the brother of Jakob Bernoulli. He did mathematical and chemical research, and became professor at Groningen (1695) and Basel (1705). He wrote on differential equations, finding the length and area of curves, isochronous curves, and curves of quickest descent. He founded a dynasty of mathematicians which continued for two generations. |
