| biography:
| Dutch Protestant politician and theologian, born in Utrecht, W Netherlands. He was a minister of religion in Amsterdam before entering parliament for the Christian Historical Union (CHU) in 1909. As minister of education and science (1915–25) he was responsible for a new education act in 1920 in an unsuccessful attempt to end the School Funding Controversy (Schoolstrijd). He retired from parliament in 1929. |
