| biography:
| Painter, born in Efri-Ey, Iceland. He studied at Reykjavík under Asgrímur Jónsson before going to the Royal Academy in Copenhagen (1912–18). From 1918 he lived in Iceland but travelled widely. Essentially an eccentric Romantic, he had a powerful sense of historical nationalism, and often featured the ‘hidden people’ of Icelandic folklore. He became the best-loved painter in Iceland. |
