| Educationist, born in Schleiden, W Germany. He studied at Louvain University, taught there, lectured in Paris (1530–6), and was appointed rector of a new Gymnasium (high school) in Strasbourg, where he reorganized the education of the town, His new curriculum was adopted by other Protestant countries, including Britain, and became a model for secondary schools. He took a prominent part in religion and politics, siding with Zwingli against Luther, and was sent on several missions abroad. |
