| biography:
| Writer, born in Querfurt, C Germany. He studied theology, philosophy, and philology in Halle and Berlin, where he met Arno Holz, a Naturalist writer, with whom he wrote several books during 1887–92, including Papa Hamlet (1889) and Die Familie Selicke (1890). His major work, the play Meister Oelze (1892), is a prime example of Naturalist writing. He rejected this in his later work, and turned to Impressionism and mystical nature poetry. |
