| Physicist, born in Hamburg, N Germany. Professor at Hamburg (1936–41) and Hanover (1941–9), in 1949 he became professor of theoretical physics at Heidelberg. He shared the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1963 for research leading to the development of the shell theory for the structure of the atomic nucleus. |
