| biography:
| Dutch general and colonial statesman, born in Coevorden, NE Netherlands. He gave distinguished service in 1874–5 during the Aceh War (1873–1914). He favoured a strong policy in Aceh (Sumatra), and after appeasement had failed, was made governor in 1898, when he applied his ideas and successfully pacified the area. He became governor general in 1904, and in his five years of office, with help from Colijn, substantially strengthened Dutch authority in the Netherlands East Indies. He was subject to criticism for his policy of military strength, particularly after van Daalen's campaign in the Gajo and Alas country, but was later regarded as a champion of Dutch authority in the face of rising nationalism. |
