| biography:
| Violinist, conductor, and composer, born in Vienna, Austria. He founded with Josef Lanner (1801–43) the Viennese Waltz tradition, and toured widely in Europe with his own orchestra. He composed several marches, notably the Radetzky March (1848), and numerous waltzes. His younger sons Eduard Strauss (1835–1916), and Josef Strauss (1827–70) were both conductors, and Josef and his eldest son Johann became known as composers of waltzes. |
