| biography:
| Writer, born in Basel, N Switzerland. A theologian and school director, his nostalgic Alemannische Gedichte (1803, 1820) established the Alemannic dialect in literary language. He also wrote in High German, notably in the tales and anecdotes published in 1808–15 in his country almanac Der Rheinländische Hausfreund and collected as Schatzkästlein des Rheinischen Hausfreundes (1811). Pious but humorous in tone, employing the style of folk stories, such tales as Kannitverstan, Zundelheiner und Zundelfrieder, and Unverhofftes Wiedersehen remain a staple of school readers. |
