| biography:
| Playwright, actor, and theatre manager, born in Vienna, Austria. Starting his career in opera, particularly in buffa roles, he came to the Theater an der Wien (1831) and the Theater in der Leopoldstadt (1845), staying on to manage the latter (1854–60). Through his farces and Singspiele he became the most successful representative of Viennese folk theatre in the bourgeois Biedermeier period. He began in Raimund's tradition of magical drama, but turned to comedy and satirizing society and politics. Many of his works are still popular today, such as Der böse Geist Lumpazivagabundus oder Das liederliche Kleeblatt (1833), Zu ebener Erde und erster Stock oder Die Launen des Glückes (1835), Der Talisman (1840), and Einen Jux will er sich machen (1842). |
