| biography:
| Economist and politician, born in Greifswald, NE Germany (formerly Swedish Pomerania). He held law appointments under the Prussian government, but in 1836 settled down on his estate. In 1848 he entered the Prussian National Assembly, and in 1849 he carried the Frankfurt constitution. The founder of scientific Socialism, he held that the socialistic ideal would come gradually according to the natural laws of change and progress, and that the state would own all land and capital, and superintend the distribution of all products of labour. |
