| biography:
| Poet and philologist, born in Sommersdorf, NE Germany. He studied at Göttingen, and became a schoolmaster at Otterndorf (1778) and Eutin (1782), beginning a career of major classical translations. He settled in Jena in 1802, and in 1805 became professor of classical philology at Heidelberg. He is best known for his translations of the Odyssey (1781) and Iliad (1793). |
