biography: Printer and goldsmith, born in Mainz, WC Germany. In 1450 and 1452 he made loans to the printer Gutenberg, to help complete the printing of his Bible. When the loans were not repaid he sued for the debt, receiving, in lieu of payment, Gutenberg's printing plant, with which he started his own business, taking Peter Schöffer, his son-in-law, as partner. They published the Gutenberg Bible in 1456.
