| biography:
| Philosopher and educational theorist, born in Oldenburg, NW Germany. After studying at Jena, he taught in Switzerland (1797–1800), where he became interested in Pestalozzi's educational methods. He was professor of philosophy at Göttingen (1805–8), and at Königsberg as Kant's successor (1809–33), before returning to Göttingen (1833–41). His metaphysics posited a multiplicity of ‘reals’, and led to a psychology which rejected the notions of faculties and innate ideas, and formed a basis for his pedagogical theories. He encouraged the study of education as a university subject. |
