biography: Footballer, born in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. He joined his first club, Ajax, at the age of 10, and at 19 made his debut in the Dutch League. He won 11 Dutch League and Cup medals with Ajax, and helped them to three consecutive European Cup successes (1971–3). In 1973 he joined Barcelona and won Spanish League and Cup medals with them. He captained Holland in the 1974 World Cup Final (beaten by West Germany). He returned to Holland as a player in 1983, joining Feyenoord in 1984, but moved back to Barcelona as manager (1988–96), guiding the Spanish champions to the European Cup for the first time in 1992. Other honours include European Footballer of the Year (1971, 1973, 1974). His son, Jordi (1974– ), played for Manchester United Football Club (1996–2000).
