| Religious leader and composer, born in Eberbach-am-Neckar, Germany. Fleeing persecution, he went to America in 1720, and at Ephrata, PA founded the Solitary Brethren of the Community of Seventh Day Baptists (1732). Self-trained in music, he wrote many robust, homespun hymns for his community. |
