| Composer and musical theorist, born in Berlin, Germany. He was appointed to the Prussian court at the age of 14, subsequently emigrating to Holland and settling in London in his early 30s. Best known as the arranger of the music for John Gay's The Beggar's Opera from popular and traditional sources, he was a prolific composer of music for the theatre and Church, as well as of instrumental works. |
