| biography:
| Poet, born in Lauffen, SE Germany. He studied theology at Tübingen and philosophy at Jena, and trained as a Lutheran minister, then became a family tutor in Frankfurt. He began to publish, with the help of Schiller, notably the philosophical novel, Hyperion (1797–9). He became increasingly schizophrenic, spent a period in an asylum (1806–7), and lived in Tübingen until his death. Today ranked among the greatest of German poets, his supple, condensed lyricism emphasizes the regeneration of humanity. |
