| biography:
| Architect, born in Graz, SE Austria. He studied in Rome, perhaps under Bernini or his pupil Carlo Fontana, then moved to Vienna, where he became the court architect (1704) and a leading exponent of the Baroque style. He designed many churches and palaces, notably the Karlskirche at Vienna, and the University church at Salzburg. He also wrote a major work on architectural history (1721). |
