| Architect, born in Cheb, W Czech Republic (formerly Eger, Bohemia). He was at first a military engineer in the service of the Archbishop of Würzburg, but after visiting Paris and absorbing new ideas, he became professor of architecture at Würzburg. Many outstanding examples of the Baroque style were designed by him, notably the Würzburg Palace, Schloss Bruchsal, and the pilgrimage church of Vierzehnheiligen. |
