| Writer, literary critic, and art critic, born in Harderwijk, C Netherlands. While working for a national newspaper in Paris (1886–91), he became familiar with the changes in modern art and literature, and became an influential literary and art critic. He also edited the magazine De gids (1908–27). His novels are realistic and show compassion towards his characters, but at the same time avoid any moral hypocrisy. |
