| Dutch stadtholder, Prince of Orange, born in Dessau, EC Germany, the son of Henry Casimir II and Henriëtte Amalia of Anhalt Dessau. He was stadtholder of Friesland, Groningen, and Drenthe (1696) under his mother's regency, and declared heir of William III of Orange in 1702, with the title of Prince of Orange. He married Maria Louise of Hessen-Kassel in 1709. He fought in the War of the Spanish Succession and was installed as stadtholder at the age of 20, after which he commanded all the Dutch troops, though subject to the overall command of Marlborough. He distinguished himself at Oudenarde (1708) and commanded the right wing at Malplaquet (1709). He was drowned in the Moerdijk on the way to defend his inheritance against the claims of the King of Prussia, the Nassau-Siegen family, and the Conti family, who were descendants of the De Chalons. He had one posthumous son, eventually to become William IV of Orange. |
