| Dutch historian and linguist, born in Groningen, N Netherlands. From 1905 he was professor of mediaeval and modern history at Groningen, and in 1915 professor of history at Leiden until the Germans closed the university in 1941. He was interned as a hostage at St Michielsgestel, but later freed with his movements restricted to Overijssel and Gelderland. A brilliant scholar, his work was translated into many languages. |
