| Dutch politician, born in Groningen, N Netherlands. He founded the Sociaal-Democratische Arbeiderspartij (SDAP) with Troelstra in 1894, and with Vliegen led its reformist wing, opposing Kuyper's policies. He specialized in labour conditions and public health, and was largely responsible for the introduction of the 8-hour working day. |
