| biography:
| Rotterdam shipowner, banker, and co-founder of the United East India Company (VOC) who, with Pieter van der Haegen, financed an expedition of four ships to the Indies via the Straits of Magellan in 1599. The expedition ended in disaster and van der Haegen was ruined, but van der Veeken's credit was strong enough to survive. He was a friend of Oldenbarnevelt in spite of being a Catholic. |
