| biography:
| Archaeologist, born in Knista, SC Sweden. Trained as a geologist, he went to China in 1914 as technical adviser to the government, but became fascinated by fossil remains. He was the first to identify prehistoric pottery in China, at Yang-shao-ts'un, Hunan, in 1921. He also initiated excavations in the limestone caves at Chou-k'ou-tien near Peking (1921–6), finding important fossils of Homo erectus (Peking Man). |
