biography: Chemist and mineralogist, born in Voxna, C Sweden. He worked at the University of Uppsala, and discovered manganese in 1774. He shared the discovery of phosphoric acid in bones with Carl Wilhelm Scheele in 1770. The mineral gahnite is named after him.
