| Painter, born in Lattrop, The Netherlands. He studied at The Hague, but moved to Paris in 1846, establishing close links with French art. He was a friend of Eugène Boudin, and exhibited with the Barbizon painters. An important precursor of Impressionism, he influenced the young Monet. |
