| biography:
| Playwright, born in Stockholm, Sweden. He studied at Uppsala, and settled in Stockholm as a writer. He first achieved fame with the novel Röda rummet (1879, The Red Room), followed by several plays. He travelled in France, Switzerland, and Denmark, then published his Giftas I and II (1884–6), collections of short stories, which led to his recall to Sweden (1884) to stand trial for alleged blasphemy. His plays Fadren (1887, The Father) and Fröken Julie (1888, Miss Julie) brought him to the forefront as the exponent of naturalistic drama. Later plays were more symbolic in form and religious in theme. His final ‘chamber plays’ were written for the Intimate Theatre, which he founded in 1907. |
