| biography:
| Political revolutionary, born in the Moluccas, Indonesia. Trained as a civil engineer in Bandung, he was a teacher in various places in the Indies and in Rotterdam. He supported the development of a federal Indonesia, and when that failed, called into being the Republic of the South Moluccas in 1950. In 1952 he was sent out to Dutch New Guinea to seek support there, but when Indonesian troops occupied Amboina and New Guinea he was arrested and deported to Holland, where he formed a government-in-exile, from which he resigned in 1991. He helped negotiate with the South Moluccan hostage-takers in the 1970s. |
