| biography:
| Dancer, choreographer, teacher, and ballet director of Afghan descent, born in Seattle, Washington, USA. He studied at the School of American Ballet and New York's High School of Performing Arts, and made his debut in Roland Petit's Ballets de Paris in 1949. He choreographed his first ballet in 1952, and within a few years had formed the Joffrey Ballet, which toured America by the middle of the decade, and achieved international fame. He cultivated a young, energetic image for his company, helping to usher in the US ballet boom of the 1960s, with rock music and multi-media techniques deployed alongside revivals of contemporary classics. |
