| Footballer and manager, born in Ellesmere Port, Cheshire, NWC England, UK. Already an established player with Everton when war broke out in 1939, he began a new career with Arsenal in 1946, with whom he gained two more championship medals and an FA Cup-winners' medal. He was chosen Player of the Year in 1950 when 35 years old. With Aston Villa and Manchester City he was a highly successful manager, and he had a spell later as caretaker of the England side. |
