| biography:
| Dominican Republic president (1960–2, 1966–78, 1986–95), born in Villa Bisonó, N Dominican Republic. Professor of law at Santo Domingo University from 1938, he served in the dictatorial regime of Rafael Trujillo (president, 1930–60), after whose assassination he fled to the USA in 1962. He returned in 1965 to win the presidency as leader of the Christian Social Reform Party. He returned to power in 1986, at the age of 79. |
