| Composer and pianist, born in Seville, SW Spain. He studied in Seville and Madrid, then lived in Paris (1905–14), where he studied piano with Moszkowski and composition with Vincent d'Indy, and befriended Debussy, Ravel, and other composers. He went on to give recitals in many European cities, and returned to Madrid in 1914, where he was immensely active as composer, pianist, and critic. In 1931 he was elected professor of composition at the Royal Conservatory in Madrid. His chief works include the operas Margot (1914) and Jardín de Oriente (1923); scenic pieces La procesión del Rocio (1913); orchestral pieces Sinfonía sevillana (1920) and Danzas fantásticas (1920); and chamber music Quinteto (1907) and Jueves Santo en Sevilla a medianoche (1927). He also wrote many works for piano and voice. Much of his work combines strong Andalusian colour and idiom with traditional forms. |
