| biography:
| Painter, born in Cabanyal, Valencia, E Spain. He first learned to sketch at the Escola d'Artesans in Valencia, then studied art at the Acadèmia de Sant Carles. In 1881 he exhibited some marine sketches at the National Exhibition in Madrid, and in 1884 received a medal for being placed second. In 1895 with ‘Retorn de la pesquera’, he obtained the second prize in the Salon de Champs d'Elysées. This success encouraged him to dedicate himself to Valencian seascapes, filled with light and minutely detailed beach scenes. 352 of his canvasses were exhibited at the Hispanic Society of New York and a further 200 were exhibited at the Art Institute of Chicago in 1911. In 1933 a monument was erected in his honour in Malvarrosa, where he worked every summer. |
