| Sports administrator, born in Rio de Janeiro, SE Brazil. He was President of FIFA (1974–98), presiding over a doubling of the size of the World Cup and greatly increased exploitation of its commercial opportunities. Before becoming the first non-European FIFA president, defeating long-serving Englishman Sir Stanley Rous, he was president (1958–73) of the Brazilian Sports Federation and a member (1955–73) of the national Olympic committee. While president of FIFA he was also a member of the International Olympic Committee. He swam for Brazil at the 1936 Olympics, returning to the Games in 1952 as a water polo player. |
