name: Henry V (of England)

sex: male
lived: (1387–1422)

biography: King of England (1413–22), born in Monmouth, Monmouthshire, SE Wales, UK, the eldest son of Henry IV. He fought against Glendower and the Welsh rebels (1402–8), and became Constable of Dover (1409) and Captain of Calais (1410). To this time belong the exaggerated stories of his wild youth. The main effort of his reign was his claim, through his great-grandfather Edward III, to the French crown. In 1415 he invaded France, and won the Battle of Agincourt against great odds. By 1419 Normandy was again under English control, and in 1420 was concluded the ‘perpetual peace’ of Troyes, under which Henry was recognized as heir to the French throne and Regent of France, and married Charles VI's daughter, Catherine of Valois.
