| Film actress, born in Thomasville, Georgia, USA. After starting on Broadway and in TV dramas, she made her first film, Count Three and Pray, in 1955, later winning an Oscar for The Three Faces of Eve (1957). She starred in two films directed by her husband, Paul Newman - Rachel Rachel (1968, Oscar nomination) and The Effect of Gamma Rays on Man-in-the-Moon Marigolds (1972, Cannes Best Actress). She received further Oscar nominations for her roles in Wishes, Winter Dreams (1973) and Mr and Mrs Bridge (1990), and won Emmies for See How She Runs (1978) and Do You Remember Love? (1985). Later films include Philadelphia (1993), The Age of Innocence (1993), and Breathing Lessons (1994), and she has also appeared in several productions for television. |
