| Meteorologist, born in Boston, Massachusetts, USA. The first woman to receive a PhD in meteorology (1949), she studied with Carl-Gustaf Rossby at the University of Chicago and trained military forecasters during World War 2. Her award-winning research on cumulus clouds and weather modification took her around the country. Her home-base was the Goddard Space Flight Center/NASA from 1979, and she was chief scientist for meteorology from 1988. |
