| biography:
| Catalan poet, born in Barcelona, NE Spain. He was drawn to poetry by the work of Rainer Maria Rilke, and contributed translations from Rilke, Hölderlin, and Goethe to Catalan magazines. He was noticed by Carles Riba, and in Riba's circle met Rosselló-Pòrcel, Teixidor, and others. His education had been cut short before he could enter university by the outbreak of Civil War, so he was largely self-taught. His poetry is existentialist, melancholy, and seeks to escape from reality, especially in the earliest collection, Primer desenllac (1937). Rilke's influence gradually disappears in De vida i somni (1948) and Les hores retrobadas (1951), and in El callat (1956) and Realitats (1963) the concrete presence of daily life makes itself amply felt. Another book is Encara los paraules (Barcelona, 1973). Vinyoli's Poesia completa 1937–75 (Barcelona, 1975) has an introduction by Joan Teixidor. Vent d'aram (1976) won both the Premi de la Crítica and the Premi ‘Serra d'or’ for 1976. |
