| Writer, born in Sacramento, California, USA. She studied at the University of California, Berkeley (1952–6) and married the writer John Gregory Dunne in 1964. She became associate feature editor of Vogue in New York City (1956–63), and also worked and wrote for the Saturday Evening Post, Esquire, and National Review. Her novels portray contemporary social tensions in a laconic style that has aroused much admiration. Her books include Run River (1963), A Book of Common Prayer (1977), Democracy (1984), and The Last Thing He Wanted (1996). |
