| Dutch politician, born in Tiel, C Netherlands. A follower of the ideals of the Enlightenment, in 1772–8 he was a member of the States of Overijssel, encouraging citizen militias and participation in government, which made him very influential in the patriot movement. A States member again from 1782, he broke the power of the nobility by altering the elective process, and also abolished the office of droste (bailiff). |
