| Broadcaster and writer, born in Stockport, Greater Manchester, NW England, UK. She studied at Cambridge, and became known for her regular contributions and series on BBC television, such as Late Night Line Up (1965–72), Holiday (1974–8), and Heart of the Matter (1988–2000). Her ITV work included four series of Reports Action (1976–8), and she also did a great deal of radio broadcasting, such as PM (1979–81). Television critic of The Times (1976–81), she was a Sunday Times columnist (1988–90), and writes regularly for magazines. Her books include A Fine and Private Place (1977, with John Drummond), The Complete Traveller (1977), and The Heart of the Heart of the Matter (1996). She received the Richard Dimbleby Award in 1994. |
