| Philologist and lexicographer, born in Barcelona, NE Spain. Professor of Romance Philology in Chicago University from 1946, he became a naturalized US citizen in 1953. Remembered for the essential Diccionario crítico-etimológico de la lengua castellana (4 vols, 1954–7), his other important books include Mots catalans d'origens aràbic (1936), a complete translation of Terence into Catalan (4 vols, 1936–59), Estudios de etimología hispánica (Mendoza, Argentina, 1942), L'estil i manera de M J de Galba i el de Joanot Martorell (1953), Introducció a l'estudi de la toponímia catalana i altres assaigs toponomàstics (1962), a fine critical edition of the Libro de Buen Amor (1967), and Entre dos llenguatjes (2 vols, 1976). |
