| Landscape painter, born in Sauðárkrókur, N Iceland. He studied engineering in Copenhagen (1900), but in 1903 decided to devote himself to art. He went to Paris in 1908 and studied under Matisse. One of the founders of modern art in Iceland, he painted landscapes on a grand scale, exploiting colour with great luminosity. |
